Craft Ideas Seniors

Charitable act for Christmas?
What have you done for others, like Seniors, for Christmas? I’m asking but giving those who would like to, ideas. Just in case!
I get a list from a retirement home, of those who have little or no families/friends, who would like a Christmas card. Then I send each of them a card, and I share the list with my close friends. I’ve even given this facility any extra Thanksgiving turkeys I have, sometimes cookies I’ve baked etc…
My husband even got in on the idea and donated a big screen TV we wanted to replace, with a newer styel. They have it now in their entertainment room.
They do craft bazaars every year so when I have unused craft supplies, or items they can sell, I donate those too.
They are so sweet – they remember me each year when I call for the list of names. One year they even invited me to come take a tour of their facility.
You know, we all could end up in a place like that someday. Really makes me think!
I wish there were more people like you in the world. What you do is amazing and I’m sure VERY appreciated. However, you can take this a step further. In our community we have group homes for troubled youth. Their counselors are always looking for a way for them to get involved in the community. If you have a group home, call them and get those kids involved. You’d be amazed at how much the old can teach the new and the new can learn from it. I’ve done it and some of these kids really took to the elderly and it’s changed lives…both young and old. It’s sort of the gift that keeps on giving all year round.
There’s also another idea, Walmart is great for giving donations to worthy causes. If you talk to the right people, alot of times they’ll donate left over plants…which is great for nursing homes…it gives them something to take care of and something to look forward to. The idea of staying young is having something to do. I know the money from the craft fair is a great idea…but sometimes money only goes so far and it doesn’t always reach the people we intend it to.
As you can tell, I love helping others too and you are so right in saying that we can end up in a place like that someday. It’s time we start changing how miserable it appears and bring some joy to what is left of their lives…even if it is the little things.
